Rent Split Calculator
Splitting rent equally is easy, but it is rarely fair. If one roommate makes twice as much money, or has a massive master bedroom with a private bathroom, a strict 50/50 split is a recipe for resentment.
Use our free rent calculator based on income and room perks to mathematically determine the exact, fair split for your household. A great rent splitter removes the emotion and provides objective fairness.

Calculate the fairest way to divide your rent based on room perks and proportional income.
The Fair Split
Here is exactly what everyone should pay to keep things perfectly fair.
How we calculated this
How to split rent fairly
"Fair" does not always mean "equal." When living with roommates or a partner, resentment builds when financial contributions feel mismatched to living situations or income levels. There are two main ways to fix this:
1. Rent splitting based on income
If you are moving in with a romantic partner, splitting rent based on income (proportional splitting) is highly recommended by financial advisors. If Partner A makes $80,000 and Partner B makes $40,000, Partner A should ideally pay 66% of the rent, while Partner B pays 33%.
This ensures that both partners feel the financial "weight" of the rent equally, allowing the lower-earning partner to still save money and contribute to shared goals without being constantly broke.
2. Splitting by Room and Perks
If you are living with platonic roommates, equal income splitting is less common. Instead, the rent should be adjusted based on who gets the best amenities.
Our rent split calculator handles this automatically by applying a "premium" to the master bedroom, private bathrooms, and parking spots. We subtract the value of these perks from the total rent, divide the remainder equally, and then add the premiums back to the roommates who claimed them. This offsets the cost for the roommate stuck with the smallest room!
